Bicycle Check Suggestions
Please check these before the beginning of the Bike Ed program on the 8th of November.
1) The bike frame is a safe size for your child. The rider should be able to straddle the bike with both feet flat on the ground and have about 3 centimetres of clearance between themselves and the bike.
2) The Seat. For a bike with handbrakes, the seat should be set to a height where the rider is able to touch the ground with the toes on one foot while seated. For a bike with footbrakes, the rider should be able to touch the ground with both feet while seated.
3) The Handlebars should have secure handgrips and be aligned properly.
4) The Brakes should be able to stop the wheels from moving. To test, apply the brakes one at a time and attempt to wheel the bike forward.
5) The wheels should be checked make sure that the wheel nuts are not loose or broken.
6) The tyres should have tread, be pumped up firmly and have no bulges.
7) The bike should have pedals. The pedals should not be broken and they should spin when tapped.
8) The Chain. To check the bikes chain, lift the back wheel off the ground. Hold one pedal and move it forward so that the back wheel turns. Then move the pedal backwards. Check that the chain works smoothly without sticking or jumping and is not too loose, dry or rusty and is free of excess grease.
